Bituminous/Asphalt Roofing Shingles FAQS

What are roofing shingles?

Roofing Shingles are roofing materials that come in flaps made of a fiber-reinforced base mat, asphalt coating, and granules on the surface.

How many types of roofing shingles are available?

There are two types of bituminous/asphalt roofing shingles:

  • Cambridge express double-layered shingles-These have multiple layers, giving them a thicker, more textured look while offering greater durability and wind resistance.
  • Single layered shingles
    • Superglass 3-tab shingles
    • 4-tab single layered shingles

These two types of roofing shingles are available in many exciting colors, shapes and designs.

How are bituminous/asphalt roofing shingles installed on residential/commercial projects?

The installation process involves the following steps:

  • Preparation: Ensure a proper roofing deck is in place: a 12mm OSB (Oriented stranded Board), T&G Boards or a nailable concrete screed can be used as a decking.
  • Underlayment for waterproofing, Armourbase Eco or plain APP can be used as underlays.
  • Installing shingles: Shingles are nailed in place using Galvanized clout nails with a specific nailing pattern to ensure durability.
  • Sealing edges and flashings: Any roof-wall junctions are sealed using granulated APP membranes to ensure there’s no water ingress.
  • Adding ventilation: Roof vents or ridge vents are installed to ensure proper attic airflow.
Do roofing shingles leak?

No, properly installed roofing shingles do not leak. They are designed to be 100% waterproof when installed with the correct techniques and underlayment. However, leaks can occur due to:

  • Worn out, broken, or missing shingles
  • Loose or improperly placed nails
  • Poorly sealed roof flashing around vents, skylights, and chimneys
  • Water pooling due to improper slope or clogged gutters

Regular inspections help prevent leaks by identifying potential problem areas early.

How flexible are roofing shingles?

Asphalt Roofing Shingles are one of the most adaptable roofing materials, making them ideal for complex or curved roof designs.

Do you offer roof installation services for shingles roofs?

Yes. We have an experienced team of certified installers who ensure the highest quality roofing standards. We also provide workmanship guarantees of 10years.

Why is underlayment necessary for shingles installation?

Roof underlayment provides an extra layer of waterproof protection between shingles and the roof deck. It helps:

  • Prevent moisture damage
  • Improve roof longevity
  • Enhance insulation

We recommend Armourbase ECO Underlayment for superior protection.

Can REXE shingles be used on low pitched roofs?

Yes. While most shingles require a minimum slope of 20 degrees, our laminated shingles can be installed on roofs with a pitch as low as 9 degrees, provided the correct underlayment is used.

Will my shingles roof be hot?

No, as long as it is properly ventilated. Adequate ventilation helps dissipate heat and moisture, improving roof efficiency and preventing condensation damage.

We provide specialized roof ventilators to enhance air circulation.

Are shingles noisy when it rains?

No. Unlike metal roofing, shingles have an asphalt-coated surface and are installed over a solid decking, reducing rain noise significantly.

Are REXE roofing shingles fire resistant?

Yes. REXE shingles have a Class E fire rating and Broof (T1) external fire performance certification, ensuring resistance to fire hazards.

Can I harvest rainwater from a shingles roof?

Yes. REXE Roofing shingles do not contain harmful chemicals or asbestos, making them safe for rainwater harvesting. However, we recommend filtration before use to remove natural impurities.

Are shingles resistant to algae and mould?

Yes. REXE shingles come with anti-algae protection, preventing moss and mould growth, especially in humid climates.

Can shingles withstand strong winds?

Yes. REXE Roofing shingles are designed to resist wind uplift and meet international wind resistance standards. Proper installation and nailing patterns ensure high wind performance.

What is the recommended attic ventilation for a shingles roof?

A well-ventilated attic prevents heat build-up and moisture damage. The recommended ventilation is:

  • 1:300 ratio (1 square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic space)
  • A combination of ridge vents, soffit vents, and turbine ventilators for optimal airflow
Can shingles be installed over an existing roof?

In some cases, yes. However, it is generally not recommended because:

  • It may void manufacturer warranties
  • It can trap moisture, leading to rot
  • It adds unnecessary weight to the structure

A complete Re-roofing ensures better long-term performance.
