APP stands for Atactic Polypropylene which is a waterproofing membrane manufactured from modified bitumen with the addition of plastomers. The membranes can have fiberglass or polyester as reinforcement.

APP modified bituminous membrane prevents penetration of water into structures thereby eliminating leakages. In steel reinforced concrete, water causes corrosion of the steel thereby compromising the load bearing capacity of the structure. Constantly wet concrete facilitates thriving of molds, moss and harmful bacteriTherefore keeping surfaces properly drained creates a healthy environment.

Bituminous primer cleans the surface by eliminating dust and soil particles thus improving adherence between the APP membrane and substrate.

Properly selected and installed APP membranes will maintain good performance for the useful lifetime of the building.

APP modified bituminous membranes with mineral granules are resistant to ultra violet (UV) rays from the sun. The APP membranes without surface mineral granules need to be covered with an additional screed, concrete/interlocking tiles or gravel.

All areas where water comes into contact with critical areas of a building. These include concrete flat roofs, low pitched roofs, foundation walls and wet areas. APP membranes are also used in ground structures such as water tanks, artificial ponds, pools, retaining walls and car parks.

APP membranes are laid by torch-on application. A flame contact causes melting on the surface of the membrane which is then pressed to the substrate with overlaps from adjoining membranes tightly bonded.

For plain APP membranes, any of the sides can stick on the surface while those with mineral granules; the outer part of the roll is the one that is stuck on the substrate.

APP modified membranes come with varying product warranty depending on the type suitable for the job. After application, we issue a 10 year workmanship warranty.

APP membranes should be stored in an upright position and when being transported, handling should be maintained in the same position and also avoid stacking any materials on the rolls. Always ensure they are kept away from heat sources and ultra violet rays.

Any sharp objects or membrane puncturing operations should be kept out of the application surface in order to eliminate leakages.

You can improve the performance of APP membranes on flat roofs by:

 Ensuring that manufacturer’s application instructions are followed during installation.

 Maintain adequate screed slope to outlets.

 Make regular cleaning of roof surfaces especially after the rains. Unclog down pipes, gutters and drains.

 Avoid unnecessary roof-top traffic.

 If you allow equipment servicemen to go to the roof, advise them to be careful.

 Do not allow service personnel to make penetration into the roof; these to be made by a professional roofing contractor.

 Keep APP membrane surfaces free from reactive chemicals.
